Initial Group of Ghanaians Relocated from Iran to Turkey
Ghana’s government has successfully relocated the initial group of its citizens from Iran to Turkey amid escalating Middle East tensions, with plans to soon evacuate those in Israel. Foreign Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced this on a Facebook post today, Friday, June 20, 2025, following strategic meetings with the ambassadors of Israel and Iran earlier this week.
The discussions, held with Israeli Ambassador H.E. Roey Gilad on Tuesday and Iranian Ambassador H.E. Ali Ghomshi on Wednesday, were part of President John Mahama’s emergency evacuation plan. Ablakwa highlighted that the talks secured border access and safe passage for Ghanaians as regional conflicts intensify.
During the meetings, Ablakwa addressed Israel’s ambassador’s recent criticism of Ghana’s voting at international bodies, asserting Ghana’s sovereign right to uphold its foreign policy principles—rooted in the 1992 Constitution, non-alignment, UN Charter adherence, multilateralism, and international law. These values guide Ghana’s roles on the UN Human Rights Council and as chair of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s board.
Beyond evacuations, the talks deepened Ghana’s insight into the conflict and reinforced its diplomatic position. Ablakwa urged Israel and Iran to pursue an immediate ceasefire and diplomatic solutions, emphasizing peace amid the crisis.
