Chris Brown Rejects Allegations of London Nightclub Attack
US R&B star Chris Brown, 36, has pleaded not guilty to attempting grievous bodily harm (GBH) following an alleged bottle attack on music producer Abraham Diaw at a London nightclub two years ago. The incident, described as unprovoked by prosecutors, also led to charges of assault causing actual bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon—a tequila bottle—added before Friday’s hearing at Southwark Crown Court. Arraignment on the additional charges is delayed until July 11, with the GBH trial set for October 26, 2026.
Brown, fresh from a Cardiff concert, appeared in a blue suit and black glasses, silently navigating photographers, supported by a small group of fans. In court, he smiled and winked at a woman before pleading “Not guilty” to Judge Baumgartner. His co-defendant, 39-year-old American rapper HoodyBaby (Omololu Akinlolu), also denied the GBH charge.
Arrested last month at Manchester’s Lowry hotel during his European tour prep, Brown was detained for nearly a week before posting a £5m security bond to secure release. He must reside in the UK, surrender his passport (retrieved for tour dates), and face forfeiture if bail terms are breached. His tour, marking 20 years since his debut album, began in Amsterdam on June 8 and hit Manchester last weekend, where he humorously thanked fans and jail staff.
Prosecutors allege Brown attacked Diaw at Tape nightclub on February 19, 2023, striking him with a bottle and later assaulting him with an accomplice. Despite the legal battle, Brown, a two-time Grammy winner with 19 UK top 10 hits, recently won best male R&B/pop artist at the BET Awards. He’ll perform in London this weekend, with his next court date post-tour.
