President Mahama Welcomes King Mswati III, Commits to Enhancing Ghana-Eswatini Relations
Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has vowed to strengthen the economic and diplomatic bonds between Ghana and Eswatini, focusing on trade and investment opportunities. During a significant meeting at the Presidency with His Majesty King Mswati III, Mahama emphasized that the royal visit would lay a robust groundwork for future partnerships.
“We see this occasion as a chance to solidify the longstanding connection between our nations,” Mahama remarked. King Mswati III, the revered leader of Eswatini, arrived in Ghana on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, for a four-day official visit to foster bilateral relations. He was greeted at Kotoka International Airport by Chief of Staff Julius Debrah and later welcomed at the Presidency alongside Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
In the discussions, Mahama highlighted Ghana’s pioneering status as the first sub-Saharan country to achieve independence, underscoring its historical leadership in Africa’s freedom movement and ongoing dedication to Pan-African solidarity. He recalled the vision of Ghana’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, for African unity, noting, “Though his dream remained unfulfilled during his era, it falls to us as current leaders to bridge our nations closer together.”
Mahama reaffirmed Ghana’s backing for the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), calling it a vital tool for promoting continental commerce and unity. “We’re thrilled to have endorsed the AfCFTA Protocol, enabling the seamless exchange of goods and services across our markets,” he said. The two nations formalized their commitment by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand collaboration areas, with Mahama indicating that subsequent talks with the Eswatini delegation would shape this partnership.
Following the MoU signing, King Mswati paid a respectful visit to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II at Manhyia Palace, reinforcing cultural and traditional links between the two countries.
