Opposition Calls for Urgent Reinstatement of Fired BoG Employees
The opposition faction in Parliament is pressing for the immediate return of approximately 100 employees sacked by the Bank of Ghana. The group argues that the abrupt dismissals, lacking valid reasons, breach Ghana’s labor regulations and infringe upon the rights of the impacted staff. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, Savelugu MP Hajia Fatahia Abdul-Aziz labeled the Central Bank’s actions as unfair and intolerable. She detailed a series of measures the opposition plans to pursue should the terminated workers not be reinstated without delay.
“The Bank of Ghana must promptly reinstate all dismissed employees to their original roles. Their hiring was legitimate; their removal was not,” she asserted. Hajia Abdul-Aziz further demanded transparency from the Bank’s management, insisting, “The Governor must appear before Parliament to clarify this ruthless misuse of authority. No one is above the law, and accountability is owed to the public.”
The controversy may stem from a recent internal audit or restructuring at the Bank of Ghana, though official explanations remain elusive, adding to the tension. The opposition could bolster their argument by citing the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), particularly provisions against unfair dismissal, to challenge the legality of the terminations. Public sentiment is growing, with social media platforms like X showing support for the workers under the trending hashtag #JusticeForBoGStaff, reflecting widespread community concern. The Minority might escalate the matter by filing a parliamentary motion or seeking judicial review to enforce their demands. Additionally, the loss of specialized staff could disrupt the Bank’s operations, raising potential economic stability issues that warrant further scrutiny.
