NPP Requires a Robust Party to Elect a President, Not Just a Flagbearer – Patrick Boamah

Patrick Yaw Boamah, MP for Okaikwei Central, has emphasized the urgent need for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to strengthen its internal unity, organization, and discipline to secure a presidential win in 2028, rather than focusing solely on selecting a flagbearer. His statement follows the party’s 2024 election loss, prompting calls for self-reflection and major restructuring amid growing internal challenges.

Boamah’s remarks hint at concerns over the party’s rush to back Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 candidate, for 2028, especially after 60 of the NPP’s 88 MPs met privately to endorse him. This has sparked debate, with some viewing it as premature succession planning that sidesteps deeper issues like the party’s disjointed machinery and electoral setbacks.

Critics highlight the necessity to:

  • Reinvigorate grassroots support.
  • Mend factional divides.
  • Update the party’s messaging and leadership approach.
  • Strengthen constituency and regional frameworks.

A party organizer told Adom News, “The 2024 loss wasn’t just about the candidate; our organization was weak and demotivated.”

The NPP’s National Council’s decision to hold an early January 2026 congress to choose a new flagbearer has divided opinions. While some see it as a strategic move for Bawumia, others, including Boamah, argue it’s too soon without a thorough post-election review and grassroots overhaul. As the congress nears, pressure mounts on leadership to prioritize unity and reform before focusing on the 2026 primaries and 2028 elections.
