President Mahama Declares Friday, 4 July, a Public Holiday for Republic Day
The Ministry of the Interior has declared that while July 1, 2025, signifies Republic Day, the official public holiday will be observed on Friday, July 4, 2025. A statement released on Thursday confirmed that President John Dramani Mahama issued this decision via an Executive Instrument (E.I.), as stipulated under Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, 2021 (Act 601).
The notice advised all citizens that Friday, July 4, 2025, is now a designated public holiday to be honored nationwide. This adjustment follows the recent approval by Parliament on Wednesday, June 25, of the updated Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Amendment Bill 2025, which removed the August 4 Founders’ Day from the national list.
In its stead, September 21, the birth date of Ghana’s inaugural leader, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has been restored as the official Founders’ Day. Interior Minister Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, addressing the legislative body, explained the shift: “We’ve eliminated August 4 as Founders’ Day, recognizing its divisive nature among Ghanaians. Instead, we’ve upheld September 21, aligning it with Nkrumah’s birthday, the visionary who guided us to independence.”
The revised legislation also establishes July 1 as a complete public holiday, commemorating Ghana’s 1960 transition to a republic.
