Security Forces Contribute GH¢1 Million to MahamaCares

Accra, Ghana – President John Dramani Mahama has hailed 11 security agencies under the Ministry of the Interior for their generous GH¢1 million contribution to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, dubbed MahamaCares, a program focused on combating non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The donation was presented during a ceremony at Jubilee House on Monday, attended by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak, Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and Inspector-General of Police Christian Tetteh Yohuno.

Representatives from the Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, Ghana Prisons Service, Narcotics Control Commission, National Disaster Management Organisation, and National Identification Authority were among the donors present. Mahama praised the gesture as a powerful show of dedication to both national safety and public health.

NCD Impact Mahama highlighted the alarming toll of NCDs, which cause approximately 40% of deaths in Ghana, including kidney failure, heart conditions, cancers, and diabetes. He noted that the steep costs of diagnosis and treatment often devastate families financially, stating, “Even the richest can be bankrupt within a year of fighting these illnesses,” calling for united action.

Fund Development The President revealed that Cabinet has endorsed a bill for the MahamaCares Fund, set to be tabled in Parliament. Once legislated, it will be overseen by independent trustees to ensure integrity. Funding will draw from the National Health Insurance Levy’s excess, government budgets, corporate gifts, and international aid. Mahama shared that the fund’s launch saw significant pledges, including his own six-month salary donation, and announced a one-month salary drive for public servants, led by the Chief of Staff’s office.

Prevention Focus Beyond treatment, the initiative will emphasize public awareness campaigns to prevent NCDs. Mahama urged Ghanaians to embrace healthier habits and regular screenings, citing his family’s history—his father’s prostate cancer and his mother’s diabetes and hypertension complications—as a personal motivator for vigilance.

Security Support Addressing security challenges, Mahama committed GH¢1 billion to upgrade agency equipment, expressing concern over the Ghana National Fire Service’s decade-old fire engines. He appealed for public patience, saying, “Our fire service works tirelessly despite tough conditions.”

Gratitude and Impact Mahama thanked the agencies, noting that MahamaCares will benefit all Ghanaians, as NCDs pose a universal threat. The fund promises to enhance healthcare access for those battling these critical illnesses.
