Suspend Electricity Tariff Increases at Once! – Awal Mohammed Urges Government

Awal Mohammed, a key figure in the New Patriotic Party (NPP) communication team, has called on the government to pause the recent 2.45% electricity tariff increase set by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) for July 1, 2025. He likened the move to the earlier suspension of the contentious Dumsor Levy, urging relief for Ghanaians amid improving economic signs like falling inflation and a steadier cedi.

Mohammed criticized the PURC’s decision, citing outdated economic data—20.67% inflation, a GHS10.3052/USD rate, and higher gas costs—arguing they no longer match current trends of 18% inflation and a stronger cedi. He dismissed claims linking the hike to IMF conditions, noting a 3% tariff cut occurred last year under the same program.

Highlighting the government’s 24-hour economy pledge, Mohammed warned that higher tariffs undermine support for welders, manufacturers, and small businesses. He pressed for an immediate suspension and a detailed economic reassessment before any further changes.
